1 Cross Country Skiing and Groomed Trails

Wawa has an abundance of cross-country ski trails all groomed and maintained by local volunteers. It’s a great low impact activity for the winter months! If you are interested in cross country skiing, you can contact the Wawa Community Centre Pro Shop at 3 Chris Simon Dr. for a membership (Family – $60, Individual – $30) and for a map of the local trails. Want to stay up to date on the trail conditions and participate in the active skiing community? Join the Wawa Facebook Group named “Wawa Cross Country Ski”. 2 Snowmobiling and Snow Bikes – Trails and Rentals

There are over 300 km of groomed trails in the Wawa area for your snowmobiling pleasure all maintained by local volunteers. Check out the Wawa Snow Riders Facebook Page for more information on trail conditions.  If you are interested in hitting the trails, make sure to stop online at the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Club Website to purchase your trail permit. 3 Ice Fishing and the Wawa Ice Fishing Derby

Ice fishing in Wawa is second to none! You can purchase your fishing licence online at www.ontario.ca or by visiting the Wawa MNRF office on Mission Road. There is a variety of different species to fish for including walleye, whitefish, lake trout, and rainbow trout. It is a great outdoor activity that can include the whole family that requires little equipment and is low on cost. The Wawa Ice Fishing Derby is March 1-3, 2019. 4 Snowshoeing and Rentals

Snowshoeing is a favourite pastime for many residents in Wawa. There are many trails in the surrounding area including those in Lake Superior Provincial Park that have breathtaking views as reward for your efforts. The Municipality of Wawa even rents snow shoes from the Wawa Community Centre free of charge! Stop by and pick up a pair or you can purchase locally at the Canadian Tire. There is a Facebook Group called Superior Hiking that often provides a place for hikers to get together to plan outings!

5 Public Ice Skating – Indoor/Outdoor

The Municipality of Wawa offers great opportunity for skating in the winter months. Throughout the week on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays you can skate from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. in open skate. On Fridays and Sundays from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. which has a skate patroller on duty. You can even skate on Saturdays with open skate from 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. The outdoor rink is dependent on Wawa weather, for information check out the www.wawa.cc website or call the Wawa Community Centre Pro-Shop at (705) 856-2244 ext. 240.

6 Family Fun Activities

Tobogganing or “sliding” in Wawa has been a favourite pastime for local children for years. On any given winter day when school lets out, if you drive by Queens Park Hill, you are sure to see many kids with their toboggans all bundled up and flying down the hill. It is a great family activity and promotes exercise carting your sleigh back up the hill! Building a snowman is another great simple family activity, yet it never gets old! Fun for the whole family to experience some outside play that costs nothing. Some snow, a few rocks and sticks, get creative! Kids love to see their snowman come to life. More adventurous? 7 Wawa Winter Carnival – 3rd Weekend in February

Every year volunteers work hard with the Municipality of Wawa to host the Wawa Winter Carnival. Volunteers choose a theme, and the fun begins! Events such as a parade, fireworks, bonfire, polar plunge and family dance all help to cure those winter blues. There are contests to be entered as well. Don’t miss out on the Wawa Winter Carnival this year, always occurring on Family Day weekend. 8 Curling and Tournaments

The Wawa Community Centre is utilized by volunteers for 4 curling leagues that include Men’s, Ladies, Mixed and Seniors. A popular sport for all ages from October to April. If you are interested in participating in any of the leagues mentioned, the contact information is listed below.

9 Fitness Classes

The Wawa Community Centre offers fitness classes for all levels of fitness! Classes include Pilates Strength, Gentle Yoga, Cardio Shred, Beginners Fitness Class, Total Body Blast and so much more! Both morning and evening classes are offered, you can pay per class or purchase a membership to the Community Centre gym which is now open 24 hours. A great way to socialize and get your exercise in over the winter months!

10 Other

There are so many fun activities to participate in this winter. You can volunteer for a local organization such as the Wawa Food Bank and help give back to your fellow residents. You can visit the Roxy Bowling Centre, on Saturdays is Cosmic Bowling! Our local legion offers great activities such as darts and Ladies Auxiliary Luncheons. Our local library is a great place to take your kids for after school activities to get their creative juices flowing.
